Description of project

The municipal building of Innerbraz houses the kindergarten in the basement, on the ground floor the municipal office and on the upper floor the rooms for the local marching band. A false ceiling is fitted in above the access area and the band’s wardrobe. So an attic is created, where the plant rooms are situated. On level with the basement floor a playground for the kindergarten is attached on the west side. It is separated from neighbouring properties to the west by retaining walls. To the north there is a pergola, whose roof serves as an extension of the municipality’s forecourt on the ground floor. The building shell of the basement and the ground floor including the ceiling above the ground level were created as a reinforced concrete structure with steel supports. In the access area and in the wardrobe the reinforced concrete construction is carried on to the roof`s underside. The false ceiling for the plant room is made of reinforced concrete too. The complete roof construction as well as the walls of the big and small rehearsal rooms are timber work.

A special challenge was to find enough continuous, vertical load transfer points between the three floors with their varying structures in order to create a solid and architecturally required slim support structure. Several alternatives with sub-roofing, timber-framing etc had to be checked for the roof above the rehearsal room with a span length of approximately 9.80 m. The choice fell on a cross laminated timber ceiling in order to give the acoustician as much liberty as possible for the design of the inner shell.
