Description of project

The is bridge was built as a reinforced concrete arched bridge with a span of 20.40 m and an overall width of 9,05 m.

Due to hillside slides around the abutment “Laterns” compressions and folds occurred on the bridge. If you compare the construction plan with the laserscan-data, the fold in the crown area sums up to 17 cm.

Description of tasks

First we had to recalculate the bridge according to the current norms without deformations in order to determine the original state.

Furthermore we had to fit imposed deformations according to the measurement into the system. However the stereoscopic model with the imposed deformations showed unrealistic (not meaningful) figures. Therefore we had to use 2-dimensioned models for the residual load capacity due to the deformations and rotations. The maximum load limitation on the Laternser Road is 28 tonnes, so we calculated with a load-bearing capacity of 29 tonnes (according to norm ONR 24008).

As the measurement data showed movements of the bridge as well as twists of the abutment “Laterns” we had to analyse the downstream and upstream parts separately.
