Repair of motorway (A14) bridges V50, V51

Description of project

At the motorway junction Dornbirn North a bridge inspection and an overhaul concept had to be elaborated due to the deficient condition of the bridges. The bridge V50, across the Fussen channel motorway-km 14.625, was built in 1970 and the bridge across the Dornbirnerach, motorway-km 14.874, was erected in the following year.

Description of tasks

During the bridge inspection and the overhaul concept the following services had to be performed:

• Bridge inspection according to RVS 13.03.11
• Drafting of sampling scheme
• Elaboration of overhaul concept on basis of the bridge inspection and the provided samples of material

The overhauls concept comprised the following points:

• description and presentation of deficits
• cause of defect
• recommended repair measures
• description of procedure of the overhaul measures
• cost estimation of the measures on component level
• estimated time of repair measures
• estimated duration of effects of overhaul measures
• movement according to EC for expansion joints
• reconstruction of abutments
• analysis for a 4/0-traffic routing
• Structural recalculation according to Eurocode of the cantilevers for the operational discharge and transmission of the impact loads out of the restraint system. Possible noise barriers had to be considered according to the client’s statement. In case of deficits in the load capacity strengthening measures had to be worked out and considered in the overhaul concept.

Construction/Design

• V50 North: 12-span slab bridge with spring plates
• V50 South: 3-/4-span T-beam bridge with spring plates
• V51: 3-span T-beam bridge with spring plates and attached slab bridge as well as local underpass in frame construction
